Stop the presses - This is the most comprehensive book I have seen for anyone who wants to start a business. I have seen a lot of books on starting a business and this the best one. After spending at least $125 on books, I wish I bought this one first and saved over $80. If you are afraid you might forget something, this book doesnąt. All aspects of a business is covered. And what it does not completely explain, it gives you information as to where you can get it. Start Your Own Business is perfect for those who want to start a selling product or a retail store. It might be a little overkill for a service business, BUT the amount of resource information makes up for this. This is what Entrepreneur Magazine does for a living and it is well worth it. Buy this before you start!

Finally a book written on entrepreneurship that has so much to offer! A guide for fledgling IT entrepreneurs as well as a resource for those faced with the myriad problems of the modern business environment. It is also an introduction to computer consulting and building a multimedia company. Readable, concise, precise, and pragmatic. The in-depth coverage and sound counsel make this a book that should be in every business person's library. I've read my copy twice. It's twenty-seven chapters of very good, easy-to-read inspirational reading. A must read for anyone thinking about starting or expanding their existing business. Highly recommended!

This book shows how to assess market opportunities. Building on lessons learned by studying numerous entrepreneurs, the book details the author's seven domains model for assessing new business ideas. The model is comprised of four market and industry domains and three related to the entrepreneurial team. These seven domains address the central questions in the assessment of any market opportunity: Are the market and industry attractive? Does the opportunity offer compelling customer benefits as well as distinct advantage over other solutions to the customer's needs? Can the team deliver the results they seek and promise to others? The book is practical and sets out how to run a customer-driven feasibility study that will guide the assessment of any new business idea or opportunity before any investment or time has been spent on the project.

I've been in business for myself for over 14 years now. Started with basically nothing and had to learn the hard lessons. My immediate advice...learn from the lessons of others. This book is a good place to start.

Author Norman asks 101 entrepreneurs what they wish they had known prior to business startup and, if known, what would they have done differently.

As with most startup or troubled businesses, capital, cash flow and knowledge of the marketplace are the heinous leaders of failure. Each of the 101 short stories tells a tale tantamount to each entrepreneur's greatest challenge and/or fear. If this depicts an accurate picture of each entrepreneur's greatest burden in creating success, listen up. This is where you will pick up the absolute BEST advice. New and experienced entrepreneurs alike will take something away from this book.

The author provides and plethora of resources including reading material, associations, societies and other pertinent information. Further, Ms. Norman suggest that readers contact her with their stories presumably to begin "Book II."

A great primer or refresher.

"You Can Farm" gives you a high-level overview of a family-size pastured beef, poultry, and pork farming operation. There's also a good dose of the "why" as well as the "how-to" included in this book. Joel discusses why a family-friendly farm is superior to a commercial commodity farm for a family with children. He also covers the ethics of properly pricing your products so that you realize a return off the products you provide which will allow you to live comfortably. Joel's viewpoint is that a family who dedicates themselves to farming and being stewards to a piece of land should be able to reap a return on-par with a mid-level attorney.

If you want to be a "poor, dumb farmer" don't read Joel's books. But . . . If you want to raise your family in a healthful, wholesome country environment AND make a reasonable living while doing so, this book is a good second step. As a first step, I would highly recommend one of Joel's other books "Family Friendly Farming." That book is all about the "why" behind small family farms. After reading "You Can Farm" and "Family Friendly Farming," I would highly recommend "Pastured Poultry Profit$" and "Salad Bar Beef," as these are the titles that go into the nuts & bolts details of Joel's grass-based small farm production model.

Joel also includes an extensive suggested reading list as an appendix in each title discussed above. He is very supportive of new farmers reading as much as possible on any given topic BEFORE they dive into a new enterprise. He doesn't consider his opinion to be the last word on any subject.

This set of two CD-ROMs contains a brand-new, fully updated and revised collection of the finest federal documents and resources on government grants, plus assistance programs for small businesses. There is greatly expanded individual coverage of hundreds of federal agencies and departments, along with new tips and resources for grant proposal writing. In addition, next-generation search technology now allows complete indexing and makes all files on each disc fully searchable! The depth and breadth of the greatly improved coverage of federal grants and small business programs is truly awesome.

FEDERAL GRANTS - This year, we go far beyond just the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (with its nearly 17,000 pages of loans, grants, surplus equipment, and training from 1883 agency and department programs worth $300 billion). The two CD-ROM discs have 50 unique sections devoted to specific agencies or topics, with over 100,000 pages of material!

There is specific information on each of 15 types of assistance: Formula Grants, Project Grants, Direct Payments for Specified Use, Direct Payments with Unrestricted Use, Direct Loans, Guaranteed and Insured Loans, Insurance, Sale/Exchange/Donation of Property and Goods, Use of Property, Facilities, and Equipment, Advisory Services and Counseling, Dissemination of Technical Information, Training, Investigation of Complaints, and Federal Employment. Categories of service provided include: Agriculture, Arts, Business and Commerce, Community Development, Consumer Protection, Disaster Prevention and Relief, Education, Employment, Labor, and Training, Energy, Environmental Quality, Food and Nutrition, Health, Housing, Humanities, Information and Statistics, Law/Justice/Legal Services, Natural Resources, Regional Development, Science and Technology, Social Services and Income Security, and Transportation. Our reproduction of the CFDA alone would be substantially less expensive than the printed version offered by the Government Printing Office at $63. As the catalog itself says, "Get started today exploring the amazing world of grants and loans provided by the Federal Government!" Our new document collection, however, goes far beyond just the CFDA - by 88,000 pages!

SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE - There is comprehensive information for entrepreneurs with documents, forms, and materials from the Small Business Administration, General Services Administration, and Securities and Exchange Commission. It includes an updated version of the complete SBA contents from our SBA CD-ROM: library of documents, forms, startup kit for small business, information about loan programs and financing, laws and regulations, small business research reports, success stories, training workbooks, disaster and terrorist relief loans and aid, franchising information, international trade assistance, listings and directories, and SBA standard operating procedures. A full set of "frequently asked questions" (FAQs) provides a wealth of information about how the SBA can assist small business owners. GSA material includes information on small business support. The SEC material includes questions and answers, rules and pending rules that apply to small businesses, small business forms and associated regulations, and other information from the Office of Small Business Policy.

For complete coverage of additional medical, health care, scientific, and technical federal grants not included in this set, please see our "deluxe superset" of four CD-ROMs (ISBN 15924895715).

This CD-ROM has over 107,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems, and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc makes a great reference work and educational tool.
